Talcum Powder Dangerous and They Never Told You

The Talcum Powder Lawsuit Helpline continues to keep woman updated on the news regarding the link between Talcum Powder products and ovarian cancer. We continue to be amazed and horrified as we learn again and again THEY KNEW and never told us about this link. Didn’t anyone tell them that ovarian cancer can be fatal and destroy lives. We can lose our mothers, grandmothers, wives, daughters, friends and women we love and care about from this fatal disease.

We found this article online written by a dermatologist and would like to share it with our readers. We will be commenting as well.

Why we should all be more careful when sprinkling the talcum powder
by MiriamStoppard
Studies have linked talc to ovarian cancer, especially if used in the genital area, and it can also act as an irritant. It may feel soft and soothing but there are health risks to talc. As a dermatologist, I’ve never been keen on talcum powder. It can accumulate in skin creases and irritate, and its particles can act as an abrasive.

I’m even less happy using talcum powder on babies whose delicate skin is much more vulnerable to damage.

There was a scare a few decades back which linked talcum powder granules to bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease .

In 1991, Welsh scientists also discovered particles of talc embedded in ovarian and cervical cancers.

A report out earlier this year linked the use of talc on genitals with a 44% increase in invasive ovarian cancer among African American women.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2006 also classified talcum powder as a possible human carcinogen if used in the female genital area.

But cancer is difficult to understand because it develops over a long period and can be influenced by several factors, including lifestyle, genes and environment. Talc is a natural clay mineral composed of magnesium and silicon.
Researchers have found links to ovarian cancer
Because of its softness it’s often used in cosmetic products, such as blusher, because it prevents caking and absorbs excess moisture.

It’s also added into some tablets and chewing gum. Talc residues are often found near asbestos , a known carcinogen which means manufacturers have to take strong measures to avoid contamination when it is mined.

Some women like to use the powder on their inner thighs to prevent chafing, while others sprinkle it on their underwear to stay fresh.

But in 1982, Harvard professor Dr Daniel W Cramer and his colleagues compared 215 women with ovarian cancer and 215 healthy women who served as a control group.

Women who used talcum powder were at nearly twice the risk of having ovarian cancer than non-users. Those who used it regularly on their genitals and sanitary pads were at more than three times the risk.

Why talc use might lead to cancer is not clear. Studies have shown that talc crystals can move up the genitourinary tract into the peritoneal cavity, where the ovaries are.

And because talc particles can set off inflammation, and inflammation plays an important role in the development of ovarian cancer – and any other cancer – could be a likely mechanism.

Now baby powder carries a warning to keep out of reach of children. And pediatricians, as well as dermatologists, discourage its use on babies, who can become ill or die after breathing in the particles.

You have been warned.

The Talcum Powder Lawsuit Helpline suggests. Cornstarch can serve the same purpose and is alot less dangerous. We continue to get calls on a daily basis from women horrified by the news of the dangers of Talcum Powder. Many have lost a loved one to ovarian cancer. If you believe your diagnosis of ovarian cancer or you have lost a loved one to this disease and it is related to daily use of Talcum Powder products we encourage you to join other woman and families in the Talcum Powder Lawsuit.

New Drug For Ovarian Cancer

The Talcum Powder Lawsuit Helpline is more then just Talcum Powder or Baby Powder lawyers. We keep you updated on the latest ovarian cancer news and treatments. We found this online and hope it helps.

New Drugs for Advanced Ovarian Cancer

In 2014, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first of a new class of drugs, called PARP inhibitors, to treat advanced ovarian cancer (cancer that has spread beyond the ovaries and pelvic area).

The new drug, called Lynparza (olaparib), is taken as a pill.

Lynparza is recommended for women with both advanced ovarian cancer and an inherited BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation who have undergone three or more previous rounds of chemo.

In a small clinical trial, about one-third of the women who got the new drug had their tumors shrink or disappear for an average of about eight months.

Talc particles from Talcum powder can travel to the ovaries and cause cancer cells. Ovarian cancer is often fatal. The manufacturers knew about the potential risks and never published a warning or added a warning label. Why? Because Talcum powder and Baby Powder is a multi million dollar industry and was marketed for adult women to use for personal hygiene to keep private areas dry.

Did Talcum Powder Ads Target Afro American Women?

The Talcum Powder Lawsuit Helpline is not just a network of Talcum Powder lawyers. We keep you updated on the latest news and articles of interest related to ovarian cancer and the talcum powder lawsuits. We are sharing this article because we feel it is of interest to women.
Johnson and Johnson has been  accused of aggressively marketing  their Baby Powder products to the  to African-American women after  sales to white women dropped off. The most recent $72 million ovarian cancer settlement was awarded to the family of an Afro American woman who used the product for feminine hygiene for decades.

It appears that  Johnson & Johnson has long been aware of the connection between talcum powder and ovarian cancer. The lawyer on the recent case  spoke to the  Atlanta Black Star, Onder said, “The evidence is real clear that Johnson & Johnson has known about the dangers associated with talcum powder for over 30 years…instead of giving a warning, what they did was target the groups most at risk for developing ovarian cancer” – in this case, black women.

Omise’eke Natasha Tinsley, a professor of African Studies at the University of Texas and contributing writer to Time magazine, points out that “Corporations have long taken advantage of the beauty rituals that African American women love.”  In a recent article, she writes, “Like pressing our hair and lotioning our legs, douching and deodorizing vaginas is something black women teach our daughters and sister-friends teach our friends.” According to research cited by Tinsley, black women employ talcum powder for such purposes twice as much as their white counterparts.

In another article published in a 2011 issue of Advertising and History Review, historian Michelle Ferranti points out that such practices have their origins in racial stereotypes and racist perceptions going back hundreds of years.  Tinsley herself adds,

Johnson & Johnson and other companies are ready to profit from these myths of the excessive black vagina. They’re willing to capitalize on our internalized misogynoir even if we die in the process. For decades, companies, including Johnson & Johnson, continued marketing to encourage black women to spend money on talcum power, which could cause cancer in our reproductive organs even as they promise to ‘freshen’ them. Because buyers were women, they were the advertisers’ targets; because they were women, they were vulnerable to side effects the companies never exposed.
A recent study from the University of Virginia, published in Cancer Epidemiology, now indicates that women who consistently apply talcum powder to their genitalia run a 40% risk of contracting ovarian cancer. Lead researcher Joellen Schildkraut said she was a skeptic until the recent studies were published.  “As you look across all these studies, I would say, why use it? It’s an avoidable risk for ovarian cancer,” she acknowledged.

Apparently Johnson and Johnson continues in it’s marketing campaigns to target women for financial and as the article continues to tell us…..gain Unfortunately, few if any consumers of all ethnic backgrounds have been aware of those risks – and in the case of the African-American community, there is decades of cultural conditioning and expectations passed from one generation to the next. That is something that Johnson & Johnson was all-too-willing to exploit.

Johnson & Johnson is unrepentant, and plans to appeal the most recent ruling. In a statement to the press, J&J spokesperson Carol Goodrich said, “the jury’s decision goes against 30 years of studies by medical experts around the world that continue to support the safety of cosmetic talc.”

J & J Seeking A Consolidated MDL For Baby Powder Lawsuits

J&J Wants Talcum Powder Lawsuits Consolidated

The fact that J & J is seeking consolidation would imply they think 1000’s of lawsuits are coming.  Given that ovarian cancer is on the rise we can see the concern. After all, how many women used and are still using their talc product down there.

The Consolidation of Talcum Powder ovarian cancer lawsuits  helps them  move more efficiently.  Johnson & Johnson has over 1000  talc lawsuits filed against them and we think the numbers will increase. The 72 million settlement is putting women on the alert.

There are 87 cases are pending under the same judge, and Johnson & Johnson has requested that the remaining similar 16 cases be consolidated in that jurisdiction. The lawyers will fight it out.

Multidistrict litigation is a procedure utilized in the federal court system to transfer  all pending civil cases of a similar type filed throughout the United States to one judge in one jurisdiction. This is usual and customary in mass torts and dangerous drugs and medical devices effecting large groups like Talcum Powder. The decision whether cases should be transferred is made by a panel of seven federal judges appointed by the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation meets periodically to review requests that cases be consolidated for pretrial matters pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 1407,a law passed by Congress. Although the panel meets in different cities in the United States on a periodic basis, the Clerk of the Panel is permanently stationed in Washington, D.C. Your case will be filed in the state chosen by a multi district litigation panel. For instance, the current vaginal mesh lawsuits have been consolidated in West Virginia under Judge Goodwin.( also Johnson and Johnson ) You do not have to go to the state where the lawsuit is consolidated in. A multi district litigation is not a type of class action. Although class actions may be transferred to an MDL consolidation in the same manner as single plaintiff cases. However, for cases to be treated as proper for an MDL consolidation the panel must find they have one or more common questions of fact. Since commonality is also an required element for a class action, class actions are frequently litigated in MDL proceedings.

Ovarian Cancer Lawsuits Will Soar  and Baby Powder Is Big Business

Sales of Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder products came to about $374 million in 2014, according to Euromonitor. That’s not essential to a $70 billion company that makes most of its money selling medical devices and drugs. But without Baby Powder, J&J may not have developed Baby Oil or Baby Shampoo nor have a baby division worth some $2 billion. Baby Powder’s value to the company extends well beyond sales.

We are receiving calls on a daily basis from women who think their ovarian cancer diagnosis is from their using Baby Powder for years. J&J is facing more then  1,200 claims on behalf of women with ovarian cancer. Callers tell us that they believe that  genital dusting  of  talc powders gave them this feared and often  fatal disease. Johnson & Johnson is no different then the tobacco companies that knew about research linking smoking to lung cancer but kept this information from the public and fought attempts to regulate their product.
